I've also thought MMOs could go with a system to have "town clothes" vs "combat mode gear" that changes fluidly as you move between game areas/modes.heartlessgamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02809717223567961650noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13266751.post-10031107939088975752022-12-09T04:15:44.724-05:002022-12-09T04:15:44.724-05:00I think this is a battle that was fought and lost ...I think this is a battle that was fought and lost well over a decade ago. It used to annoy me for role-playing reasons but the arguments against it for PvE are very much a minority perspective. Foe PvP the competititve advantages it gioves are much clearer but even there it seems as though most players prefer to take the hit for the aesthetic choice.

It's always seemed to me that the very simple answer to it all is to have a toggle at the client end that either blocks all appearance data or, if that's too complex, one that simply uses a default class/level appearance for everyone. The player character could be exempt from either, allowing people who wanted to see their own skins but no-one else's.Bhagpusshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03499162165023939880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13266751.post-5718234823812081302022-10-31T16:34:47.615-04:002022-10-31T16:34:47.615-04:00The way I would put New World's gathering is &...The way I would put New World's gathering is "it just feels right" which may not be the gold standard but of MMORPGs I've played its the one I would reference other games to copy. And agree this very much came to New World from the survival genre and there are other games in that genre that do it well; maybe better.

This also goes to your comment Bhagpuss about randomized spawns and how it may get in the way of "players just getting something done". There is a real chance they are over-complicating something that is best left simple. With that said you can say that about the entire Ashes game at this point; everything seems to be a mile deep in complexity.

Thanks for the comment.heartlessgamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02809717223567961650noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13266751.post-26491074641541122882022-10-31T16:01:37.875-04:002022-10-31T16:01:37.875-04:00I don't know about New World having the best l...I don't know about New World having the best logging, let alone other kinds of gathering. It's fine but preferred Landmark's later versions and Valheim, admittedly not an mmorpg but very, very similar, is better than either of them.

Vanguard was much better than any of them when it came to skinning and also in the way many mobs could be appropriately logged (Treant types) or mined (Elementals). It also had group gathering and the whole gathering/crafting ecosystem was far more sophisticated than New World's.

Personally, I'm not all that crazy about either randomized spawns - sure they might act as a slight speed bump for bots but they're really annoying for players just trying to get some gathering done - or having every tree and rock interactable. It leads to a lot of visual blight when people clear-cut areas, even if they do respawn after a while. I'd rather have the landscape curated more attractively, with the nodes discretely tucked away where their presence or absence isn't too obvious.Bhagpusshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03499162165023939880noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13266751.post-36469886649130035682022-09-24T14:13:49.547-04:002022-09-24T14:13:49.547-04:00Getting out of control now.Getting out of control now.heartlessgamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02809717223567961650noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13266751.post-91675043802145331302022-09-23T17:59:14.655-04:002022-09-23T17:59:14.655-04:00Three?!

And I don't think I'd be able to tolerate that overhead view thing either. The Diablo/Sacred games get on my nerves because of that.

I say Diku because MMO devs don't seem to be able or willing to drop Diku. Then again, D&D rules don't translate into anything we'd be willing to play as a videogame. At least the 2e AD&D won't, I haven't played tabletop since the early 90's -- but from what I've read of 4e that doesn't seem like my idea of D&D either.Talynhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17848472705380445923noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13266751.post-2695581094114235872009-09-28T16:24:27.699-04:002009-09-28T16:24:27.699-04:00We sure did. NWN2 was mediocre and changed everything that didn't need to be changed instead of changing what needed changing, but NWN2 was shoveled off on Obsidian who have a history of mediocrity.

Give me NWN1 with better graphics, less loading screens, a connected player hub, and a fully featured and functional DM tool, and I'm in heaven. All without a subscription please and without paid DMs.

I think you are stuck in the Diku model. You immediately assigned a monthly sub and paid DMs (ala game masters of UO, other games). Neither is needed and NWN1 was so close to being perfect.heartlessgamerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02809717223567961650noreply@blogger.com
