Go Mythic, Go!

Not resting on their laurels, Mythic is firing back against the naysayers claiming that 2/3 of Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning's (WAR) content has been cut. They went even as far as putting it all into an Official Capital Cities FAQ.
So you cut 4 of the 6 cities, does this mean I will be enjoying WAR with only 1/3 of its original content?

We did not cut 2/3 of our content; far from it. Before, when our goal was to do six of them, WAR cities were the typical places to go for player services and to just hang out. By focusing all of our energy and effort into two capitals, we have managed to add so much more content than we would have if we had continued pushing to launch all six. Our capital cities are now packed with content and places to explore including: Guild taverns, dungeons, quests, PQs, King encounters, player services, and the most exciting thing of all--now they act as battlegrounds to fight over and protect when under attack. Beyond this, the list goes on and on. WAR now has more content than ever before, and by focusing our efforts we have been able to create a unique experience far beyond our plans when we first set out to make a great game.
Grab a drink and some snacks, this is not a short read.

Also, a great quote out of the FAQ about the platform for future content that Mythic is building.
Do you think you’ll ever revisit the other four capital cities?

Of course! One of the most exciting things about WAR is that while creating a great game for launch, we have also built a solid foundation to expand on for years to come. This foundation has provided us with a perfect canvas for future live content and expansions just as we did for Dark Age of Camelot. We want to see how players handle our first two capital cities worth of content and iterate on that feedback for future cities.

  1. Ok, i'm a WAR fanboy, but even to me this sounds like pure BS:

They had planned the cities to act as battlegrounds from the very beginning. Also, the dungeon within them and the PQs. So saying now that cities would've been merely hanging out places for players is just a load of crap.
I'll go and read that FAQ, but since they start lying so blatantly right off the bat, i don't think i'll be believing much of what's left in it.

  2. Dr. Fink,

I'm not sure where you got your information. They only talked about how cities would work in sieges after showing off Altdorf and Inevitable City. Other than that, they have been silent on the issue.

They were simply planning standard capital cities that could be captured. It is evident that is no longer the plan, so I don't see the call for BS having any merit.

While march 2008 hardly qualifies as "from the beginning" i can't see any mention of the fact that having all those features added would mean a reduction in the number of cities available.
So as of last march, cities were gonna be all that, and 6 of them.

    This is still BS.

  4. I'm sorry to inform you, but the decision to have only two cities was made before that March grab bag. No, I have no source to back that statement up, but I will give a bit of evidence.

Altdorf and Inevitable City are the only two capitals they've talked about or shown actual in-game footage of for a very long time. This to me shows that they were already on the two cities path, but had wanted to see where it lead before making the official announcement. It lead to a better system that allowed them to add more features to the capital city system and that is where we are now.

The March grab bag, which came a month after I made the content-cut prediction, shows the beginnings of their new plans for capitals. Prior to that grab bag, capital city info was sparse and to me that signals that there were changes coming.

I just wanted to add my 2 sense to this.
I have no problem with them cutting content for release as long as they have plenty of content in the game to justify the box price but I will reserve judgement on this till we have more information. As of now Mythic are following the usual line of hyping their product up too much when it's still a work in progress. Until the NDA is lifted I will take everything I hear with a large pinch of salt and I would recommend other people do the same coz in my opinion people who invest too many of their gaming ideals in a unreleased game end up being disappointed.

Cutting content in Beta is fine but how can a cut in content be more content. Many bloggers have been shouting about how great these capital cities have various tiers for months now, and it could be much longer, so they planned for these evolving cities and now can't deliver. 4 cities are not in the game because they can't deliver on time is not more content or else I need to go back to school.
Also, I like your blog and I hope you get the game you want, cos it's close to my ideal game, but Dr. Fink proves that Mythic are spinning like crazy right now to hype this game up and we as consumers need to be aware that spin is very close to bullshit.

  7. Anon,

Mythic didn't "cut" content. Content has to exist before it can be cut. "Six capital cities" was a bullet note on a design document, that after beta testing has been erased and replaced with "two capital cities".

The reasoning as to HOW this move results in MORE content is fairly well covered in the FAQ, so please stop asking the "How does that mean more content?" question when it is answered a hundred fucking times by the people making the actual content.

ok...I don't want to get into symantics on words here but the point of my post was that a number of mmo's have been released recently and most/all have been disappointing at release time.
I'm just taking all the drip fed information we're getting not too literally. I really can't handle been let down again so soon, lol.

  9. Necra,

I guarantee you won't be let down with WAR if you keep your expectations moderate. I may cheer the title like a fanboy from hell, but my expectations are in check and I know what to expect.

WAR will be on par with WoW as far as polish and quality, but with a far more interesting and bigger set of features.
