CCP = Epic Fail

Not much to say here: Eve Online Client Source Code Leaked.
Full source code for the client for popular MMORPG Eve Online was made available recently via BitTorrent on The Pirate Bay. Along with the torrent, the user posts a chat transcript with a representative identified as [IA]Morpheus from Eve’s developer and publisher CCP. In the lengthy and scatological exchange, the poster of the source code attempts to get some answers about CCP’s much maligned security practices, particularly concerning the rife issue of bots and scripting in their flagship game. The conversation was a little less than professional.
I'm sure that player government-thing will get right on this one.

    The Galactic Student Council passed a unanimous motion deploring the situation.

    As it turned out, the only code that was made available was some decompiled Stackless Python.

  2. Meh, maybe EVE will get a customizable UI out of this incident. Wouldn't it be something if EVE had a user-friendly UI? Players might even start enjoying the control scheme, instead of bitching about the inadequate excuse of a UI CCP currently has implemented.

  3. Hmm, the blog you link is out of date.

    I like EvE's UI :D I can't imagine it any other way. I'm all for custom UIs but EvE's UI feels almost like it's part of the challenge.

    I know, that's not really a good thing, but it does add to the whole flying-a-spaceship thing. (shouldn't be that easy)

    *yawn*

    So someone decompiled a bunch of python files.. and claimed them leaked..

    You are aware it's not very hard to do and anyone with the official client, unzip program and the python programming language packag can do that? (and it's not a superhuge effort either).

  5. OK Mr Anonymous Expert, we'll just sweep this one under the rug. After all, everything EVE is just blown out of proportion?

    I don't give a damn about the severity or ease of this source code leak. It is just another bread crumb in a long trail of bread crumbs leading to a very bad place for CCP.

    Oh sure, I'm not saying it isn't a PR nightmare for CCP - it probably is - I'm just saying it's not a "leak" (as in someone at CCP leaked it to the Internet), since the source can be extracted from the client exe file you have to download to play the thing in the first place... and as such it's not really big news at all.

    Of course it gives everyone a chance to jump at CCP, which is probably not very good for them.
