Summary of New World's Balance in Power Update

This post is a placeholder for the summary of the recent Balance of Power update from the New World developers.  I will be referencing back to this post for my commentary over the next few days.

Stuff from the news post on the New World site.

Price Discover Aeternum’s next chapter for $29.99.

For Resilience, we’ve added crit reduction to all players via the equip load effects (Light -15%, Medium -20%, Heavy -25%). Current items with this perk will receive the “Health” perk instead which increases the player’s health as a certain percentage of their base health.

 NEW INFLUENCE RACES
Capture new Influence Towers and strike down enemy Factions in open world combat for territorial supremacy. Each Faction will compete for Influence in specific zones during scheduled times. If an attacking Faction earns enough Influence through PvP Missions, Influence Towers, and Forts before the race ends, they’ll receive bonus rewards, plus the opportunity to declare War. If the defending Faction prevents the attackers from scoring enough Influence within the time limit, they’ll earn bonus rewards for both the Influence Race and the next War. Regardless of who wins, the attacking Faction with the most influence can escalate the conflict into War.

WHAT CHANGES ARE COMING TO REVAMPED MUTATIONS WITH RISE OF THE ANGRY EARTH?
To further improve Mutations as an endgame activity, we’ve revamped the experience for level 65 players. As a result, you will need to purchase Rise of the Angry Earth and max out your character level to enter Mutated Expeditions. Based on player feedback, Mutations will have 3 difficulties and a weekly limit of 100 Mutations. This added accessibility means less time waiting for groups and more opportunities for players to help less experienced Adventurers.
Players can also look forward to more desirable endgame rewards. For example, players that complete Elite Mutations will have a chance to earn Artifacts. Here’s the difficulty breakdown.
Intermediate: Requires 650 gear, includes Mutation
Hard: Requires 675 gear, includes Mutation and Promotion
Elite: Requires 700 gear, includes Mutation, Promotion, and Curses

Mostly gathered from this Reddit thread.

Anxiety about Spending Umbral Shards:

  • Players have anxiety about spending hard-earned Umbral shards.

  • Items will now drop at appropriate higher item levels based on the content being played.

  • No need to invest extra resources to level up items.

Expertise System Removal:

  • Expertise system posed an additional barrier after reaching Level 60.

  • Players needed to invest time and effort to increase expertise for different gear slots.

  • This system slowed down gear progression and caused frustration.

  • Devs recognized the disconnect between player experience and the expertise system.

  • Decision made to completely remove the expertise system in Season Three.

New Approach to Gear Progression:

  • Players will no longer need to grind expertise for different gear slots.

  • Items will drop at higher item levels based on the content being played.

  • Players can access higher-level gear more naturally and smoothly.

  • Focus on aligning gear progression with players' engagement in the game's content.

Benefits of Removal:

  • Streamlined gear progression process after Level 60.

  • Eliminates the need for additional grinding to unlock gear potential.

  • Offers a more intuitive and rewarding approach to acquiring better equipment.

  • Reduces frustration and friction often associated with the expertise system.

Player-Centric Enhancement:

  • Removal of expertise system reflects devs' responsiveness to player feedback.

  • Aims to provide a more enjoyable and engaging gear progression experience.

  • Allows players to focus on content rather than the grind for expertise.

  • Creates a more balanced and enjoyable endgame gear acquisition process.

Umbral Upgrading Changes:

  • Concerns about spending valuable Umbral shards.

  • Items will drop at higher item levels, reducing anxiety.

  • No need to invest additional resources for leveling up items.

Inventory Management Improvement:

  • Currently, players receive too much loot after content.

  • Goal is to provide less loot but make it more meaningful.

  • Introducing "Loop Biasing" to tailor loot drops to player attributes and preferences.

Chase Items and Artifacts:

  • Introducing impactful and unique "Chase Items."

  • Artifacts with unique perks can drop from various sources.

Closing Thoughts:

  • Introducing tournaments and mounts.

Lessons Learned: Patience Is Rewarded - New World: Rise of the Angry Earth!

Update: After posting this the New World team also posted a news article covering tons of details.  Check it out here

Original post below...

Blaugust rolls on and today's lesson learned is: patience pays off.  Yesterday there was some frustration in the New World community with a developer update that basically said "wait until next week".  But they tricked us because the avalanche of information started TODAY with back to back videos from the New World team.  To say I am excited is a vast understatement and I am so glad I held back any complaints about the dev update.  My patience has been rewarded!

The first video is the Balance of Power update which covered a ton of changes coming to the game.  I can't do justice to all of the changes in this post so I will link to the video and let folks consume it.  I will be posting more about individual aspects over the next few weeks as we learn more.  I am really excited for the changes though and in summary is "less, but more meaningful loot + new ways to get the gear you want".

The second video, which just a cinematic, is the real HYPE video in my book. Not only is it a great cinematic for the expansion, Rise of the Angry Earth, but it reveals some key pieces of information.

  • Some big bads from the Angry Earth invasion
  • A peak at the new weapon: the Flail
  • A peak at mounts; we saw a wolf mount and a mastodon-like elephant mount
  • Maybe a hint at not only mounts but animal companions / pets?
  • A possible new enemy type and/or race maybe - there was a Minotaur-looking character featured
  • Launch is 10/3

Lessons Learned: Next Week

It looks like Blaugust 2023 is going to finish out before we get the big expansion news for New World.  How do we know?  Because the most recent developer update from Amazon Game Studios, the makers of New World, can be summed up by the phrase "next week".

There is a good summary of the video on Reddit: here.  But really the answer is "next week" as the team dodged many of the pressing community questions stating that we'll get answers next week with the Season 3 + expansion announcements.  I sort of give credit to the team willing to put out this video knowing that so many answers were "next week" and the community feedback wouldn't be that great.

 Lesson Learned: Be patient.

Personally I think it's an odd week to try and plan any major announcements.  Starfield will be dominating the gaming community buzz so it will be hard to elbow out space for any other major news.  I know I'll be planets deep in Starfield and not as invested in New World next week.  I imagine many others will be as well.

With that said I am excited for the announcement(s) and what the team is bringing us.  We know there will be the expansion, mounts, major perk reworks, combat balance changes, and the dreaded details of the "New World gear reset".  I just may be delayed getting around to viewing depending on how awesome Starfield is :)

New World: Finished ALL Ultimate Trophies!

It is done.  All 9 ultimate trophies are MINE in New World!  A quick rundown of what that means

  • 900,000 (100k ea) faction tokens earned and spent
  • 405,000 (45k ea) gold spent on Ultimate trophy component
  • All major trophies (500k+ gold estimate)
    • 18x Major Combat
    • 15x Major Crafting
    • 15x Major Gathering

So what has almost a million gold bought me?  Not much to be honest but the satisfaction that crawled across my face finishing this was unmistakable. With that said here are a few benefits:

  • I never have to travel between houses again just to change trophies out; this is honestly the biggest aspect of these trophies and about the only reason to get them.
  • I can have all tertiary bonus trophies active: 3x major loot luck and the thanksgiving trophy
  • I have an open trophy slot now so ready for a future trophy

As I said "not much".  There is also a big downside though: the ultimate trophies are bound to the player so cannot be resold/traded once crafted. Major trophies were NOT bound so have the advantage of being able to be "borrowed" by others or sold off if no longer being used.  Personally I don't trust anyone to borrow my stuff in a virtual world and secondly I don't get rid of stuff.

Here are some screenshots to go with this.

Lessons Learned: Steam Backlog Is What It Is

This post is part of my running series: My Steam Backlog (see all MySteamBacklog tagged posts).  This post is ALSO a part of Blaugust 2023's lessons learned week. Why? Because my Steam backlog is what it is.

I had set the year off to tackle as much of my Steam backlog as I could.  It was part reflecting on games that I played in the past and part playing games I never played (or didn't play enough to form an opinion).  The reflecting has been easier than the playing so I thought for Blaugust's "stay motivated" week I'd hit some of the "need to play" list.

I stuck to my alphabetical approach and I'm still in the Bs which meant I hit some doozies.  First was The Binding of Isaac which just killed my momentum as I didn't really want to play it and just kept putting it off.  I should have skipped it but felt I needed to be fair to the objective of hitting the full backlog.  Putting this one off meant I put the rest off and thus didn't get anywhere and thus had to shift gears for "staying motivated" week for Blaugust.

Lesson Learned: If a game in my Steam backlog is not interesting then don't play it.  Life is short; don't play crappy games.

Going forward I will be more strategic in the games I play from the backlog. This doesn't mean I won't touch on all games, but some will just be commentary like I've done for games like the Bioshock series.

I also picked up on a tool called Steam Completionist from a post on Aywren's blog so I am going to check that out to see how it can help me better track my backlog.

Lessons Learned: Final Thoughts on Linus Tech Tips

It is ironic how the Linus Tech Tips saga mapped out to the Blaugust 2023 plan.  Started in the "creator appreciation week" and now wrapping up in the "lessons learned week" with: Here's the plan.  This will likely be my last commentary on this saga and can be summed up by: right message; wrong messenger.

Before we get to the "right message" I want to note that I found the start of the video as a microcosm of what I see as the issue: the cult of Linus.  Linus starts by talking about being chewed out by his boss which he makes out to be the LTT community.  Linus Media Group (LMG) is a company with a CEO and that CEO is not Linus.  Linus' boss is in fact not the community; it is the leadership of LMG.  This is part and parcel of why there is a problem; Linus continues to treat this as though he's a small content creator on Youtube instead of letting the 100+ company that is LMG be a company.

With the start out of the way I want to address the "wrong messenger".  I ask the question: is this Linus or is this Linus Media Group?  Like I said about the apology video we need to hear from the LMG CEO and not the personality of Linus.  Linus has avenues, such as the WAN Show podcast, to get his updates out.

With that said I do want to acknowledge that the underlying message was the right message (finally).  The right changes are hopefully going to happen.  LMG seems like a fun place to work (though that "cool work place" may be part of the issues with employees feeling overworked -- no one wants to lose the "cool job").

I do wish them luck in their goals but right now I can't get past the apology video and the "cult of Linus".  I may watch a video that pops up in my feed but I will view it as a corporate production vs how I see most Youtube video content.  The LTT that was no longer exists.

The Build That Motivates Me: Wheelchair Mage

Updated: 8/29/2023 - added weapon tree builds - also this build is up to date for Season 2.

I wanted to share the build that keeps me motivated in New World.  This is the gear for my "wheelchair mage" as we've dubbed it on Castle of Steel.  It is heavy armor sword and shield/firestaff; focused on stacking fortify and using flamethrower to mow the folks down.

Here is the gear:

Staying Motivated NOT to play stuff!

The Blaugust 2023 "staying motivated" week rolls on and as I mentioned a couple days ago I mistimed my "Steam Backlog" game playing to match up to this week's posts so instead I am going to talk about staying motivated NOT to play everything that pops up in my feed!

The first temptation for my game time is World of Warcraft's launch of the official hardcore servers for Classic.  Willhelm over at TAGN had some commentary on the event and it seems there is a rough go of the launch impacting more than just classic hardcore so that is helpful to keep one temptation off my plate.

"... but the errors and issues, down to being told constantly that you’re not in a raid if you join the queue as a group, have been annoying"

Next up on the temptation list is Skull and Bones which is supposedly starting a closed beta today.  It looks like a cool game and I applied for the closed beta.  However, based on some leaked rumors the game is in rough shape so I'm not sweating that beta invite landing.

Wayfinder is also tempting.  There is early access for $20, but it has been a trainwreck of server issues for the game.  I played the earlier betas and the game was OK, but I couldn't get past the idea of picking a premade hero vs creating my own character.  Still on my "maybe list" but right now I'll pass with the early launch jitters.  As a note my main thoughts on the game mirror Massively OPs First Impressions: I honestly can’t tell whether I like Wayfinder or no.

The last temptation is Guild Wars 2 launching it's Secrets of the Obscure expansion. I've said many times that if my fancy with New World ever wanes that Guild Wars 2 is the game I'd jump back to.  I have jumped to Guild Wars 2 multiple times before and each time I get the most recent expansion.  I also believe that the best times in MMOs are around launches; new games or expansions.  So there is a thread of me that wants to jump in at launch here but my brain can only take one true MMO at a time and the MMO of the moment for me is New World!

I'll be over here motivating myself to stop being tempted by stuff :)

Staying Motivated for Starfield

For Blaugust 2023 "staying motivated" week I also wanted to touch on Starfield as it is right around the corner (8/31 for early access, 9/5 for regular folks).  The game is shaping up to be a once-in-a-lifetime launch and every passing day requires more and more motivation to be ready for it!

starfield

Outside of the fact that Bethesda is a huge name in the gaming world what caught my attention most about Starfield is the scope.  There are other games like, No Man's Sky, that compete on scope but for me the ship sailed on No Man's Sky with its subpar launch (though all reports are now it is a really great game with lots of updates).

Seeing the early gameplay trailers and deep dives on systems for Starfield I was blown away by things like building your own ship module by module only to be followed up by "oh and you can collect your own crew to have on the ship".  Then you can take your starship to a thousand different planets (honestly once these games get past like 10 planets it doesn't matter if its 1,000 or 100,000).  On top of this there will be fully fledged storyline!

Then there are things like building bases and factories to make you stuff. There is resource gathering and combat.  All of it affected by a planet's gravity and other environmental variables.  Honestly the only thing that caught me off guard that is not included in the game is ground vehicles but I can let that slide if I can just hop in my starship and fly around a planet.

I am trying to control my hype here.  This is going to be a massive launch and I expect problems; no doubt some interconnected online service the game relies on will hiccup.  Additionally it is a solo game with no multiplayer and my history is I fizzle out on solo games (but surely Starfield will be different).  So I need to keep myself motivated because I really, really want this game to be everything it is being hyped up to be as it looks very, very fun.

Staying motivated in New World (Gear Reset)

Making an audible for Blaugust 2023's "stay motivated" week and swapping from my original plan to cover my Steam backlog.  Instead I am going to talk about New World and how I am staying motivated in the face of the pending gear reset.  The developers have yet to detail that gear reset, but we are getting drips of information in each update.  Knowing it is coming and lacking the details to go with it makes it very hard to stay motivated to play currently.  What exactly are we working for if it will be made irrelevant in a month's time?

For me the answer to the "what keeps you motivated in New World?" question is simple: completing stuff.  New World has some vertical progression with it's expertise, gear score, and upgrade system but that is all behind me at this point.  There are many horizontal progression paths for me to work on now.

Ultimate Trophies

This is the big one.  There are 9 ultimate trophies in the game to get and each one requires copies of each major trophy in that category (crafting, gathering, and combat) and a crafting component that costs an arm and a leg (45,000 gold + 100,000 faction tokens).  I now have 8 out of 9 of them and I ran out of arms/legs a while ago.

new world ultimat crafting trophy
What fascinates me is that I don't even craft but here I am knocking out the ultimate crafting trophies.  Just. To. Have. Them. In case I do want to craft.  The major trophies are fine but require you to teleport to all of your houses to change out trophies for each craft you want to do.  Ultimate trophies combine them together and thus remove the need to zoom around changing out trophies.  Soon I'll never have to ever think about changing trophies around in my house.  I will have all the ultimate trophies and be done!

I need approx 30k gold and 80k faction tokens which I hope to finish out this week.

Crafting Gear Sets

Crafting trophies are great but in order to hit end game gear score (590+) items in crafting you must also have the crafting gear sets.  The gear pieces drop from various named enemies all over the world or can be bought on the market.  I set a threshold of 3,000 gold.  If it was cheaper than that then I bought it; otherwise it was off to farm.

I actually enjoy farming in New World.  I am aided by ample time to AFK back and forth to kill the named spawns.  I probably wouldn't do it if I had less play time.

Heartrunes

Lastly on the horizontal progression is getting all the heartrunes in the game.  I actually only have a few and only a couple of them upgraded.  This will be where I change my effort over to once I am done with ultimate trophies.  These are also perfect "grind" objectives (except you have to complete an expedition 3x to get basic heartrunes to start with).  For example the brutal grasping vines required me to get 3,000 thorny vines from briars.  That was fun (not).

But I embrace the grind. Some folks Netflix and chill; I grind and chill.

 Other Stuff

 Then there is other stuff.

With transmog now released there is a ton of skins to go out and collect.

I still love playing Outpost Rush and PvP Arenas and they give great rewards so there is always a new build to be looking towards.  I am eyeing up a heavy sword n shield/spear build along or a BB/IG medium build.

Then there is the company I hang out with; lots of returning players to help out.

Also at some point I really need to clean up my houses; so much furniture dumped everywhere.

I finished out my first transmog set in New World today.  Here is my "wheelchair mage" (Heavy armor with Firestaff/Sword and Shield).

  • Helmet, legs, and boots are Fire Lord
  • Chest and gloves are Expedition Captain (Arisen Commander skin name).
  • Sword is Falling Star
  • Shield is Starfish defender

My New World Day 1 Transmog (almost)

This is my first (almost) transmog for New World.  And of course realizing now I don't have the gloves, pants, or helmet unlocked so off to The Depths to farm materia or wait for it to come back on mutation rotation.

Oddly enough the skin is from the Expedition Captain's set, but the skin name is under Arisen Commander

Steam Backlog: Bioshock, Bioshock 2, Bioshock Infinite

For Blaugust 2023's "stay motivated" week I told myself I was going to play games in my Steam backlog, but then New World decided 8/21 was the day of days to drop transmog. So no backlog games played today, but since we were still in the Bs and next on the list was Bioshock it still qualifies as a game I can cover in my Steam Backlog series!

Bioshock is one of my all time favorite games and those that know the game probably can guess why.  Even all these years later I hesitate to spoil it for anyone.  It's a must play!  Bioshock was more of an experience than it was a game, but that is not to say the gameplay wasn't great.  This game was an amazing marriage of story telling, game play, and that final satisfying twist.

While Bioshock was more of an experience its successor, Bioshock 2, was more of a game.  The story featured some interesting choices and like the first game I'd rather not spoil them.  There was more game here as well but I am not sure it was for the better.  Some of the "more game" took away from the story aspects of the game but it was still a great game and story.  There was also a multiplayer mode.  Why?  I don't know. It was not needed and I didn't enjoy it.

The most recent Bioshock entry is Bioshock Infinite and marked the series departure from the deep sea to the skies.  Like the first two the story elements of the game are best left unspoiled.  The underlying world that they are building is just fun and the expansion into floating cities in the sky was well done.

Bioshock was more experience.  Bioshock 2 was more game.  Bionshock Infinite was more of both game and experience.  Infinite is one of the few games where I feel like story telling and action combat are done well together.  And there is plenty of action in infinite with mechanics that on paper seem impossible, but the game somehow pulls it off.

Over all if I had to stack rank the games it would be:

  • Bioshock Infinite
  • Bioshock 1
  • Bioshock 2

Bioshock 1 is a must play, but if you've played it you know why you likely aren't going to play it much more than that first play through.  Bioshock Infinite however is fun to jump back into as there is so much fun to be had and different ways to traverse the game.  1,2, or Infinite - all of them are worth your time!

This post is part of my running series: My Steam Backlog (see all MySteamBacklog tagged posts).

A sensible view on New World transmog tokens

New World is launching it's transmog system tomorrow and with it there is an uproar in the community.  Tokens for transmog are approximately $2.50 USD each.  Additionally players can gain them via the season pass (free track and premium track).  The New World devs also included a 1% chance to loot them from elite chests up with the caveat of you can only loot one per week.

It is that 1 per week / 1% drop chance that has everyone up in arms.  I could write out more thoughts on it but I snagged this summary from Reddit that will stand as my response.  Anyone reading this that still thinks AGS is being unfair is just looking to argue for arguments sake.

Steam Backlog: The Binding of Isaac

Another week is beginning for Blaugust 2023 and as I laid out in my planning post this week it is all about playing some games in my backlog!  So... consider this post as part of my running series: My Steam Backlog (see all MySteamBacklog tagged posts) and come back all week for more!

Dusting off where I left the backlog we were still in the Bs (and 2023 is almost over!).  The next game up was The Binding of Isaac.

This is a weird one.  I don't remember why I got the game and I only vaguely remember playing it originally so I decided this was one I needed to download again to write a post about.  It didn't take me long though to remember why I didn't play it much.

The first part that throws me off is the theme of the game.  Let's just say it's not for the feint of heart.  As I have no heart... well let's continue.  No, actually lets not.  I don't like the premise or theme of the game. If you don't want to think about a mother sacrificing her child then don't play this game.

The second part that throws me off is... well.. I'm old(er) with slow(er) reflexes and poor(er) vision.  Binding is a game that is all about fast reflexes amid tons of things going on at once.  I did get the hang of it after a bit and can see the draw in the skill ceiling the game offers.

BUT combine a theme I don't enjoy with gameplay that is for a younger (better?) gamer and I could not force myself to an hour of play.  I gave up after twenty or so minutes.

MMOre creators

Blaugust 2023 marches on and for a low key Saturday post to end Creator Appreciation Week I wanted to throw up a couple MMO creators I also follow on Youtube

  • Lazy Peon - https://www.youtube.com/@TheLazyPeon
    • Not a fan of everything as Peon spends a lot of time in games I'd never consider, but he revisits games year over year so I find his insight on change over time very useful.
  • Force Gaming - https://www.youtube.com/@ForceGamingYT
    • Covers a lot of gaming areas but has a love for MMOs.  Always great insights and reasonably reliable to have videos up on key game events in a timely fashion.
  • Josh Strife Hayes - https://www.youtube.com/@JoshStrifeHayes
    • Josh is like a college professor and makes viewers feel at home in his classroom.  Like Peon I am not a fan of everything but there are some masterpieces in his channel like his recent reflection on his own content fro three years ago: Why Modern MMO's Suck - Josh Strife Hayes Reacts (I'd recommend any MMO nerd like me to check it out)

Content Creator Drama: Linus Tech Tips

I was going to write a long Blaugust 2023 post today about the Linus Tech Tips (Linus Media Group) drama, but I decided against it.  Sometimes "content creators" grow up to become companies and to no one's surprise (except maybe Linus') a company cannot operate like a "content creator".  So much respect lost for LTT in the past week and their apology video (not going to honor them with a link) was the straw that broke me (seriously; sponsor jokes!? WTF!).

So... I did the one thing I had in my power to do that actually means anything in this situation.

Fin.

I wanted to use Creator Appreciation Week for Blaugust 2023 to hit some areas adjacent to my current areas.  One of those adjacent areas was music; specifically music that is made for and encouraged for content creators to use.  NEFFEX is one of those musical talents contributing to the greater content ecosystem and is a favorite for many video game content creators.

NEFFEX produces copyright free songs (a mix of metal/rock/rap) and actively encourages content creators to make use of them (as they say in every video description: CREATORS - DOWNLOAD AND USE THIS SONG COPYRIGHT-FREE).  I first ran into them watching some New World PvP video montages.  Their song Tough really fits the theme of PvP action.  Tough is also my favorite NEFFEX song; take a listen below.

If you are in search of music for a video NEFFEX has hundreds of songs for you to choose from; give them a listen.

Went to war in New World last night.  Got in my DPS (aka deeps) but ultimately couldn't nab many kills and we lost the war.  Good learning experience though.

HUNTgaming

I have been dabbling in Way of the Hunter recently and wanted to share my favorite Way of the Hunter content creator for Blaugust 2023 Creator Appreciation Week.  That creator is HUNTgaming on Youtube.

What I like about his content is that he has a near perfect blend of comedy and game content.  Even when he is doing a guide I end up laughing out loud.  One of his most recent videos featuring the new Africa map is a classic.  Rubber duck? Swimming pool? Love it! Check the video out below and if you are playing Way of the Hunter or just want a few laughs check him out.

New World Content Creators I Follow

As part of Blaugust 2023's Creator Appreciation Week I wanted to share a hit list of New World content creators that I follow.

new world

The bedrock of the New World content creators is the team over at StudioLoot (formerly New World Fans).  BDLG and Redbyrd were following and podcasting about the game years before we saw a launch and since launch have been the recognized stewards of the community.  Redbyrd has pulled away from the game recently, but BDLG continues to be active.  As far as I can tell their New World To Go podcast is the only New World podcast left standing.

The next set of creators I want to surface are the folks over at M11 who put together the top PvE builds after every patch.  If you are looking to do well in PvE mutated expeditions look no further than the build and guides at https://pvebuilds.xyz/

If the concept of "territory wars as a spectator sport" interests you then I will direct you to the one and only YaBoiWilly on Twitch.  He is a prominent shoutcaster for all things New World wars.  It has been awesome to see his enthusiasm for the game pay off in the streaming content world.  He has been doing it longer than anyone I know.

Next here are a few generalist Youtubers that are always on top of New World updates:

Last I wanted to copy over a list of "PvP build Youtubers" that I dumped on a Reddit reply; all of these folks are worth following if you want to get into PvP builds for New World.  Copied in full, without edits, below:

For PvP it is harder because so many possible builds are viable but a few stand out above the rest and then build X works in one mode like OPR but not in another like arenas. Ultimately I have yet to find any reliable build websites for accurate PvP info so instead rely on a collection of youtubers

Blaugust 2023: Kicking Off Creator Appreciation Week (August 13th – August 19th)

Today marks the start of Week 3 of Blaugust 2023 which is Creator Appreciation Week.  As mentioned in my planning post I intend to:

  •     I am going to dip into some adjacent-to-gaming creator spaces to inspire some posts this week
  •     I will probably feature some New World content creators

But before we get to that I would be remiss if I didn't show some appreciation for the creator that brought us Blaugust

Belghast is the ringleader and runs the Aggronaut blog and the Aggrochat podcast.  He is also on Youtube. If you haven't yet go ahead and stop by and say hello and say thanks for Blaugust! May my meager outbound links do whatever small part they can in the great Google algorithm!

GamesMadeMe: Actual Games + My Gaming Origin Story!

GamesMadeMe is a series of posts that cover gaming-related topics that have shaped who I am as a gamer today.  Since I've covered specific moments in games and related topics like gaming magazines it is about time I actually talk about some games that made me!  Today let's take a jaunt down the gaming history that has informed my current day preferences.

We'll start at today and work backwards as best as my memory can recollect!

new world
New World is my current jam and holds the record of "most played" across my entire gaming career.  As of this post I am nearing 2,500 hours played!  Whats most amazing is that I never planned to play this game.  I only found out about it because it was hosting an early preview event at the same time as the Crowfall beta test.

While testing Crowfall the population numbers plummeted one day and when I asked why the New World preview event was mentioned.  I decided to give it a go because I just wasn't feeling Crowfall and I was absolutely hooked from the moment I set foot in New World.  I am still hooked.  I love New World.

gw2

Guild Wars 2 (GW2) is next on the list.  Between New World and Minecraft (which we'll hit after GW2) there were a lot of games but Guild Wars 2 was the one that stuck around and kept coming back around.  I own and have played the first three expansions but admit I am all about PvP so spent a lot more time in World vs World vs World (wuvwuv for short).

Also as I mentioned in my Game Markets post I was a huge investor in Guild Wars 2 and truth be told that is where most of my /played time was invested in GW2.  I earned so much gold and converted so much of it to premium currency that I have piles of stuff and knick-knacks on my account. I also have several level 80 characters.

I never really got hardcore into GW2 even though I played a ton (1,000+ hours).  I didn't have a guild and never played with one during my time in the game.  The game is very solo friendly so it was never pressed upon me to need to group up.  I did a lot of things but aside from playing the market one specific thing never grabbed hold.  I never finished the original story, never did dungeons/fractals/raids, really didn't finish any living seasons, and outside of some ascended gear pieces and a single legendary greatsword don't have much gear.  I own the first two expansions but barely played their stories/areas.  But I still loved the game and should I ever break up with New World it's likely where I'd go back to.

minecraft

Minecraft launched in 2009 which was a special year as that is when my oldest was born.  I tried Minecraft off the recommendation of a co-worker.  At the time there was no survival mode and the game was a very basic block building game.  The UI still showed how many players online; I used to have a screenshot showing there were about 500 total users online!

The beauty of Minecraft way back then was that it ran on our work computers.  When the survival mode launched my co-workers and I filled our breaks and lunch hours with Minecraft.  We had our own server and played the crap out of the game (some of my Minecraft videos from this era exist on my Youtube 1 2 3).

As a first time father Minecraft was the perfect game in those first few years of my oldest son's life.  Relatively non-violent and abstract blocky graphics = perfect for a kid to watch.  I played Minecraft pretty hardcore for it's first four years.  Lots of fond memories and I wish to this day I'd of stuck with making videos (I could be super famous now!).

And that would have been the end of Minecraft after I moved on to other things, but right as I was breaking my addiction my oldest son hit Kindergarten and Minecraft was every kids world at the time.  My son picked up Minecraft about 2013/14 and he still plays it to this day.  We've played together on and off and we even got mom (not much of a video gamer) to play.  Some my fondest gamer dad moments are building stuff in Minecraft only to find out my son cheated and spawned a wither the next day and destroyed it.  I still have the worlds saved and a personal cherished digital artifact is when screen recording accidentally recorded my son exploring a new castle I had built for him.

war

Before Minecraft my passion was Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning (WAR for short). WAR also holds the record as the game that broke me.  I was the uber fanboy for WAR. As a long time Dark Ages of Camelot player I was confident that Mark Jacobs could do no wrong.  WAR was going to be the best game ever.  It was the World of Warcraft killer (remember we are going new to old so we haven't gotten to WoW yet).

WAR is also unique in that the entire rise and fall of the game is captured in this blog's history (see tagged posts here).  If you were interested you could watch as I go from eternal fanboy to ex-cult member.  I loved the premise of the game and had a great group of folks to play with.

We formed the Casualties of War guild on the back of a bunch of World of Warcraft/MMORPG bloggers (400+ members at its peak).  Running that guild taught me I never want to run a guild again even though in every aspect of real life I am a leader (people leader at work, leader when I was in the military, leader in boy scouts, always my kid's sports team coach, etc).

WAR was really fun to play when it launched. Unfortunately the game was never really finished and it showed.  End game zones were mostly devoid of content and the advertised end game of city sieges never really worked.  When it did work it was exploited heavily.

WAR ended up crashing and was shutdown.  Fortunately I broke my fanboyism long before it was in shutdown and even though I revisited it for a little bit it never got it's hooks back in me.  It did forever change how I want to interact with new MMORPGs.  I'll be optimistic about games.  I will play them hardcore like I do New World and be a cheerleader.  But never again am I going full fanboy and expecting a new MMORPG to be the next big thing.

wow

November 23, 2004.  A day after my birthday.  World of Warcraft launched and there I was on the Azgalor server with my mind blown (even though I had played in a beta phase before launch).  How could a game be this good?  12 hours later I realized I hadn't left the computer.

World of Warcraft (WoW) holds the spot in my record book for the longest gaming sessions.  I could not put the game down and my addiction was aided by an odd work scheduled at the time where I basically had half the month off and the other half 12 hour shifts.  I was also in the military in full on real-life-war-mode so interest in anything other than work and then getting home to play WoW didn't exist.

I loved playing WoW launch.  I was fortunate in that I never really had problems accessing the game and playing.  It was just a magical time to be playing online games.  So many new players, and gamers, coming to check this once-in-a-lifetime game out.  I played as a Horde Troll Shaman but refused to heal; I was all about the DPS shaman with windfury on the great axe.

My time playing WoW was focused on PvP.  I really didn't care about dungeons and did very few.  I never participated in a raid nor did I have interest in raiding.  I wanted to do nothing more than prowl the Alliance zones looking for trouble.  Since there were PvP servers I was given that opportunity.  Later on battlegrounds came out and that was my jam.

As magical as WoW was though it didn't hook me long term.  I gave up playing before the first expansion came out and it was months later before I gave The Burning Crusade a try.  I really don't know why I went from playing 12 hours straight to not interested.  Partly it was landing an amazing girlfriend who then became my wife, but mostly I just stopped playing.

daoc

Before WoW it was Dark Ages of Camelot (DAoC).  DAoC launched Oct 9, 2001 and I played it faithfully until WoW wrenched me away.  I loved the Realm vs Realm and played a Runecaster for Midgard on the Merlin server.  I was at or adjacent to many of the world firsts in the game: there when the first relic was captured, in the race to be the first player to 1 million realm points, and there when the guy that did make it to a million realm points got part of the game world named after him (screw you Dakkon!).

Mixed in with my time in World of Warcraft and Dark Ages of Camelot was Star Wars Galaxies.  I was an early adopter as I was heavily involved in the Star Wars roleplaying forums the game hosted before launch.  I was in the early beta/alpha tests when all there was to the game was an empty sand zone and speech bubbles.

Star Wars Galaxies had some of the best possible MMO systems ever created.  It is a shame they never got the time of day if they were not strictly combat or Jedi related.  As I tell people I want to be the moisture farmer so as the game steered more to letting anyone become a Jedi the more it wasn't for me.  But systems like housing, vendors, gathering, and crafting - no game has done it better.  No game even comes close.  Damn it game developers; give me SWG 2.0! (No; I am not interested in SWG emu servers).

Ultima Online is the first graphical online game I played.  It is the first game I bought when I had my own PC and my own place as a young adult.  I rushed to get internet solely because I wanted to play Ultima Online.

I was introduced to Ultima Online years before that moment when I was working in a grocery store as a teen and my manager played it.  I would get a chance to go to his house and watch him play on a potato of a computer.  At the time it was original Ultima Online with all it's craziness: no safe zones, red players killing anyone that walked out of town without a plan, player run cities, game masters that would literally play god in the game, and houses you could lose if you lost your key.  To illustrate how early we are talking: there were still tons of open spots to place a house.  I never got to play, but watching was enough for me.

Fast forward back to being in my own place with my own PC and I was joining right as Ultima Online Renaissance came online.  The Renaissance expansion brought a mirrored version of the world, called Trammel, that was completely safe and it opened up a flood of new land to fill with houses (the "open spots" having long ago been taken up in the original Felucca realm).

Being a new player I had zero idea what the land grab was and other than some memory of watching my old manager play the original game I didn't know what I was doing.  So I treated the game like a virtual world; more intent on interacting with other players in a social aspect than getting the next progression item checked off.  If that meant just picking up garbage people left on the ground (oh yeah; items could be dropped and picked up by other players... how novel) then that's what I did.

Eventually I did catch on that I needed to progress and that spun into having multiple different accounts so I could abuse all sorts of systems like the faction system, housing, and more.  Unfortunately I was so late to the housing party the only way to get a house was to buy it off eBay (yes, I bought my UO houses off eBay!) because all open spots were taken so even if you wanted to place a house you could not.

I was very fond of PvP in UO.  I was not a player killer, but I loved faction warfare (player killing without becoming a red player).  I also got into the provoking skill which was basically the easy mode of end game PvE content as you could entice monsters to fight each other while you hoovered up the loot they dropped from killing each other.

I also got big into taming anything the game let you tame; my favorite being the white ice dragons.  Anyone that knows taming in UP knows the saying "kill all"; nothing more satisfying than a half dozen dragons suddenly vaporizing an enemy.  While in today's PvP metas it is "kill the healer" back then it was "kill the tamer".  Many a fight was won based on how many dragons were brought.

mud mush

Now I need to fill a gap between my gaming origin story and Ultima Online because before graphical MMORPGs I was addicted to text MUDs (multi user dungeon).  Without MUDs we wouldn't have the MMORPGs that we have today.

The one that got me started was a MUD running in IRC on the Xnet IRC server.  I stumbled on it joining a chat room and a bot posting a puzzle; once you figured out the puzzle it let you in fully to the MUD.  It was like virtual Indiana Jones! I have no other recollection other than those pieces, but it was tons of fun and featured perma death PvP.  I killed my younger brothers character at one point.

Probably my most invested MUD was a Star Wars themed one.  I don't remember the specifics and the websites are long gone, but I do still have notes I took on paper about it.  I used graph paper to map out areas of the game and take notes about things like "droid here" or "viewport overlooking space dock".  It had space flight as well as many planets.  I do vaguely remember getting into some drama and getting banned at one point.

I played plenty of other MUDs as well along with MUSHES and whatever other acronym soup we used back in those days to differentiate one from the other.  I even got into Medievia MUD for a bit which was the largest MUD ever and still running to this day.  It was mind blowing they were aiming for things like 20,000 players online and wanting to get to 200,000 (not sure what they ever peaked at).  I was used to MUDs with 5 people online; thousands was crazy to think about.  One of the coolest part of Medievia and many other MUDs was player created content.  It was just text so the barrier to entry to have your dedicated players help build was very low.  I honestly wonder if some of my poorly worded room descriptions are still floating around somewhere in Medievia!

We'll finish on the origin story of gaming for heartlessgamer and recount the day I won a Sega Genesis.  I had played Nintendo and Super Nintendo at friends and extended family houses, but in my house we were still stuck in the "black and white" television era.  Without easy access to them video games were no different than any other toy to play with when visiting friends and family.

That all changed the day that I won a Sega Genesis.  The Sega was a possible prize from selling magazine subscriptions as a fundraiser.  I (really my mom) had done a good job getting folks to sign up so I was in the running.  It was towards the end of the school day and classes had just let out and announcements were coming over the intercom.  I hung back in the classroom to hear them.  I really, really wanted that Sega Genesis.  Then I heard my name and to this day I can remember looking at my teacher at the time and seeing the biggest smile on her face as I sprinted out towards the office to get my prize.  I hoisted the box over my head and for a few glorious moments I was the king of my school.

I walked to school so had a few blocks to get home with the prize.  I really don't remember my parents reactions, but they were supportive of me getting it up and running.  I wasn't kidding when I said we still had "black and white" televisions.  Our main set was too old to get the Sega working and after phoning a friends parents we were able to get it set up on my mom's tiny little kitchen TV.  From then on I spent many an hour at the kitchen table playing Sega games in black and white. Some favorites from the time; Wrestlemania, Shining Force, and of course Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

I will never forget winning that Sega Genesis and I swear the movie 8-bit Christmas is loosely based on that time in my life (I already had an awesome treehouse my dad made though; I just needed a video game console).  And that is the gaming mode that started it all and therefore is what truly made me a gamer!
